God's Glorious Church # 2 - We Are the Body of Christ

While a number of metaphors are used in scripture to describe the church, the prevalent metaphor is that of the body. The church is the body of Christ on earth. This message will begin to look at this amazing reality and its implications for all believers.

God's Glorious Church # 1 - What is the Church?

What is the church? Where did it come from? Why does it exist? What is its mission and purpose? The average person would probably struggle to answer those questions, due to so many conflicting examples and philosophies having to do with the church. This message begins a new series in which we will explore from God's Word answers to the question, "What is the church?" with the hope of ending up with a glorious view of the body of Christ.

The Spiritual Physical

Just as many of us have an annual physical in order to see how our bodies are functioning, there is much wisdom in conducting a "spiritual physical" to see how we are doing spiritually. God often calls his people to examine themselves. In this message we will look at the benefits of doing regular spiritual assessments as well as how to go about it.

I've Had Enough

As 1 Kings 19 starts we see an exuberant, expectant Elijah the prophet. In the aftermath of God sending fire from heaven at Mount Carmel and the destruction of the prophets of Baal, it would seem that things are finally going to be set straight in Israel. However, all we have to do is read a couple of verses into the chapter to see that not only was jubilant change not coming, but things were about to get worse,
leaving Elijah to moan, “I’ve had enough.”

You may be experiencing something similar as you face another new year. Your portfolio is not what it
was. Employment seems elusive. Your relationship is on the rocks. And if one more politician promises
hope and change… well, you get the idea.

What do we learn from the events of the Prophet in how we should look to God and approach life when
we’re at a point where we’ve had enough?

1st Century Seekers

Perhaps the most famous seekers in the Bible are the wise men. While there are many traditions surrounding them that are not necessarily true or historically accurate, we know that they were men in search of the newborn King, whose birth and eventual death and resurrection would change their lives as well as multitudes of others throughout history. There are some valuable lessons about seeking and searching for the Lord that we can glean from the lives of the Magi.

The Birth Announcement of A King

When the angel Gabriel visited young Mary and told her that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and then carry and give birth to Jesus, it was unlike any encounter that a twelve or thirteen year-old girl has ever had in all of history. This message takes a look at some of the remarkable elements of the Christian faith that are demonstrated through this familiar Christmas narrative.

A Symphony of Praise

Just as in a symphony orchestra, there is the need for unity, where each musician is playing his or her part, with all the parts coming together in order to create a beautiful masterpiece, so in the church it is as we bring our individual gifts, talents, abilities together and play in harmony with each other that we bring God much glory. This message looks at what it takes for the church to become a symphony of praise to our Savior.

Hail To The King! # 12 - Closing the Book on the Kings

We bring our study of the kings of Judah to an end by looking briefly at the final six kings, with Josiah being the only good king in the bunch. As the Chronicler states, the situation had gotten so bad that finally, "there was no remedy." But Jeremiah the prophet, while foretelling doom and destruction on Jerusalem and the southern kingdom, also tells of a coming King, the "branch of Righteousness", bringing hope to God's people.

Hail To The King! # 11 - The Worst and the Best of King Manasseh

King Manasseh was a man who lived two distinct lives. He had his "extremely wicked" half, followed by his "extremely humbled and entreating the Lord's mercy" half. We can learn from Manasseh the need to be delivered from evil, to pay attention to God's warnings and calls for correction, and that God is always waiting to forgive because of his steadfast love and faithfulness.

Hail To The King! # 10 - Drawing Near to God

One of Judah's greatest kings was Hezekiah. He brought much reform to the land, restoring the temple, and calling the people to draw near to God. Some excellent principles can be derived from Hezekiah's reign for us today, in seeking to draw near to God, that he might draw near to us (James 4:8).
