Doubt Your Doubts
Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Due to the immense need and desire of our church body to know more about how to defend their faith, we, at West Hills Community Church, are beginning an apologetic mini-series titled "Doubt Your Doubts." This series will review several well-documented debates between those on apposing ends of the argument over Christianity.
The series begins on Tuesday, August 18. We will be reviewing a debate between atheist Christopher Hitchens and apologetic expert, Dinesh D'Souza. Hitchens is a columnist and literary critic who adamantly apposes the stance of Christianity. His latest book, entitled God is not Great; How Religion Poisons Everything. In this book, Hitchens argues that religion is "violent, irrational, intolerant, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry." His counterpart, Christian apologist, Dinesh D'Souza, is the author of What's So Great About Christianity. The New York Times named him one of the most influential conservative thinkers of our time. According to Francis Collins, director of the human Genome Institute, D'Souza assembles arguments for the defense of Christianity "from history, philosophy, theology and science - yes science! - he builds a modern and compelling case for faith in a loving God."
On Tuesday, September 15, we will show a debate between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox. Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, was the former Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford. He states that, "Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is the belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence." He is faced in the debate by John Lennox, a fellow professor at Oxford. Lennox, Professor of Mathematics, has lectured extensively in Eastern and Western Europe, Russia and North America about apologetics and the exposition of Scripture.
On October 12th & 19th, Jerram Barrs, from the Francis Schaeffer Institute, will give us practical training on how to engage with people in our culture as Jesus did in His, and how to effectively share one's faith. He will teach on the principles for engaging with culture and communicating the gospel with unbelievers, and other related teaching/training that would be profitable for us as a church.
Our prayer is that we can join together as a community of churches to arm those in the body of Christ with the foundational information they need to boldly share the wonderful things that God has done in their lives. We believe it is essential for Christians to face the tough, thought-provoking questions head-on, and to ground ourselves in the rational defense of Christianity.
This series, held in our Doxa at 7:00 p.m. on the dates listed above, is meant to be a growing opportunity for believers and unbelievers alike. We hope your congregation and/or those you may know that are searching will join us. If you know of someone who is unable to attend but has questions they would like answered, please direct them to , and we will do our best to get them a thorough, Bible-based answer. Our cafe will be open and available for snacks/drinks before the session and during intermission. Childcare is also available.
If you would like any posters, fliers or any other publicity materials, please do not hesitate to contact the church office.
